01 — The story

The story

Deul Park is a landscaped riverside park and eco resort on the banks of the Ajay River near Durgapur, in Paschim Bardhaman district. The area was once plain forest, known mainly for its stories of the local chieftain Ichhai Ghosh, whose temple stands nearby in the Garh forest; the resort has since made it a popular weekend outing.

Visitors stroll along the grassy embankments, picnic on the lawns and watch the sun set over the river, and there are rides for children and open ground for cycling, jogging and games. The resort buildings follow traditional Bengal styles, and folk and Baul singers often perform here. Local lore remembers Ichhai Ghosh for defeating Karnsen and for his later death at the hands of Lausen.
