The story

Bhabani Pathak's Tilla is a low wooded hillock in Durgapur named after Bhabani Pathak, a rebel leader remembered for resisting the British. Local tradition says he used the high ground as a lookout over the country around it. Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay gave the place a lasting literary presence: Bhabani Pathak appears in his novel Devi Chaudhurani, and the hillock has become part of the area's folklore.

Today the tilla is a local landmark with open views over the surrounding countryside. Its trees and undergrowth shelter many birds, butterflies and squirrels, which makes it a favourite with walkers, birdwatchers and photographers. Families come for picnics, others look for a quiet corner for yoga or meditation, and cultural events and festivals are sometimes staged on the site.
