01 — The story

The story

Sector 17 Plaza is an open-air commercial square often called the centre of Chandigarh. When Le Corbusier planned the city in the 1950s as a grid of self-contained sectors, he set aside Sector 17 as its main business and shopping district, and it was built along with the rest of the city. He also intended it as a public meeting ground for community life.

Tree-lined walkways, fountains and open squares shape the plaza. Shops range from big-brand outlets to small local boutiques, including bookshops and art, and restaurants and street food stalls serve Indian and international dishes. A large parade ground in the sector hosts the Independence Day and Republic Day celebrations.
