Sant Sarovar Dam spans the Sabarmati River a few kilometres from Gandhinagar. It was built as part of Gujarat's water management works to supply irrigation and drinking water, but its embankment and the land around it have become a popular place to spend time outdoors. Water spills through the sluice gates on one side, while the reservoir spreads out on the other.
Paved paths, gardens and benches under trees line the waterfront, used by morning joggers and by families on weekend picnics. The reservoir draws kingfishers and herons, and in winter migrants such as painted storks and flamingos may be seen. Early morning, when mist sits on the water, is a favoured time for photographs.
