Sampath Vinayagar Temple in Visakhapatnam is dedicated to Lord Vinayaka, whose black marble idol stands in the sanctum. TS Rajeshwaran and TS Selvaganesan founded it in 1962, and the Andhra Pradesh Endowments Department now manages it. Local fishermen used to pray and light lamps here before heading to market.
According to local belief, during the 1971 Indo-Pakistan war Admiral Krishnan of the Eastern Naval Command broke 1,001 coconuts before the deity in thanks for the city's safety. On Sundays and Mondays owners bring new vehicles for a puja, students leave exam hall tickets before the idol, and couples place their first wedding invitation here.
