01 — The story

The story

Set up in 1986 as the City Forest National Park, this 9.07 sq km protected area in Srinagar was later renamed after Dr Salim Ali, the pioneering Indian ornithologist. The Jammu and Kashmir Wildlife Protection Department manages it, with work on habitat restoration, wildlife monitoring, research and environmental education.

Forest, streams and water bodies support over 70 recorded bird species, among them sunbirds, kingfishers, eagles, the Himalayan monal, black bulbul and blue magpie, with migratory waterfowl arriving in winter. Guided bird walks follow trails through the park, which lies a short distance from Dal Lake and the Shalimar and Nishat gardens.
