The story

The Sacred Heart Church, or Église du Sacré-Cœur, is a Roman Catholic church in Chandannagar, Hooghly district, under the Archdiocese of Calcutta. The West Bengal Heritage Commission has declared it a heritage site, and the building is a genuine example of French architecture in India.

Work began in 1875, while Chandannagar was under the French East India Company, and was completed in 1884 at the initiative of Rev. M. Barthet, helped by his brother Joachim. The French architect Jacques Duchatz drew up the design, and Paul Goethals, Archbishop of Calcutta, inaugurated the church on 27 January 1884. The church also looks after a graveyard, the Sacred Heart French Cemetery.
