The Armenian Church of St. John the Baptist in Chinsura, Hooghly district, was built at the end of the 1690s and is the oldest Armenian church in India and the second-oldest church in Bengal. The Dutch had founded their colony here in 1625, and Armenians followed in 1645. A spire was added in 1822, its foundation stone laid by Daniel Anthony Overbeek, the Dutch resident of Bengal.
Thanks to its nearness to Kolkata and the care of the Armenian Churches committee, the building is well preserved. Every year on 13–14 January the church holds the feast of John the Baptist, when pilgrims gather here. Karekin II, Catholicos of All Armenians, visited the church on 1 March 2007.
