The story

Rajendracholiswarar Temple is a Shiva temple on Maranayanar Street in Ilaiyankudi, a town on the road between Madurai and Ramanathapuram that is also called Indira Avathara Nallur. It is one of the Vaippu Sthalams, the shrines mentioned in the hymns of the Saivite saint Sundarar.

Shiva is worshipped here as a lingam named Rajendracholiswarar, with the goddess Gnanambikai as his consort. Ilaiyankudi is the birthplace of the Nayanar saint Ilaiyankudi Maranar, and he has his own shrine within the temple. The sacred tree is the vilva and the temple tank is called Deiva Pushkarani. Maha Shivaratri, Kanda Sasti and Karthikai are the festivals celebrated here.
