The story

Pandalam Mahadeva Temple stands on the left bank of the Achankovil River between Thottakkonam and Mulampuzha villages, about 3 km from Pandalam town, the home town of Ayyappan. Shiva is worshipped here in a gentle mood, with Parvati on his lap, and the main image is believed to have been installed by Parasurama. It is counted among the oldest of the 108 Shiva temples of Kerala.

The river flows past the north-eastern side and reaches the sanctum, so the temple is also called Mukkal Vattom, and it has a natural procession path round the shrine. Ganesha, Ayyappa, Nagaraja, Subramanian and other deities are also worshipped. A ten-day festival in Dhanu begins with the flag-raising and ends with the aarattu, and the yearly Kettukazhcha draws visitors. Twelve villages run the temple through the Mahadeva Seva Samithi.
