The story

Pallavaneswarar Temple stands in Poompuhar, Mayiladuthurai district, a town that is also an archaeological site. It is dedicated to Shiva as Pallavaneswarar, with his consort Soundaryanayaki, and stands on the birthplace of the Saivite saint Pattinathar. Praised by Tirugnanasambandar in the Tevaram, it is one of the 275 Paadal Petra Sthalams, and tradition holds that a Pallava king won salvation here.

A temple tank lies in front of the rajagopuram. To the left of the sanctum are the goddess's shrine and the palliyarai, and the prakara holds shrines to Pattinathar, Vinayaka, Subramania and Chandikesvara, with Dakshinamurti, Lingodbhava, Brahma and Durga in the wall niches. Kumbhabhishekams were held in 1958, 1995 and 2008.
