The Naganathaswamy Temple, or Kethu Sthalam, stands in Keelaperumpallam village, 2 km from Poompuhar and 93 km from Thanjavur on the Thanjavur–Poompuhar road. It belongs to Tamil Nadu's nine Navagraha temples and the pilgrimage that links them, representing Ketu, the shadow planet, though the main deity is Shiva as Naganathar. Legend says that when the serpent Vasuki, used as the rope in the churning of the ocean, grieved over the poison it released, she prayed to Shiva, who appeared to her here as Naganathar.
The original temple is credited to the Cholas and the present masonry to the 16th-century Nayaks. Behind a recently built flat rajagopuram, a black granite image of Ketu faces west in the first precinct, shown worshipping Shiva, and there are shrines to Ambal, Subramanya, Gajalakshmi and Bhairavar. Four daily rituals are held, and the main festivals are Mahasivarathri, Margazhi Thiruvadirai, Panguni Uthiram and Thirukartigai.
