The Padmavathi Temple at Tiruchanur in Tirupati is dedicated to the goddess Padmavathi, also called Alamelumanga, who is worshipped as the consort of Lord Venkateswara and as a form of Lakshmi. Devotees come from many countries to pray at the shrine.
Its origins rest on legend. Lakshmi is believed to have been reborn as Alamelu, daughter of Akasha Raja, a ruler of the Tirupati region, and her marriage to Venkateswara is seen as a symbol of love and devotion. Another story holds that after Venkateswara performed penance for twelve years at Alamelumangapuram, the goddess appeared to him on a golden lotus in the Padma Sarovaram tank.
