The story

Nimgiri and Hanumantgad are two forts forming the twin peaks of a single hill in Junnar taluka, Pune district, about 25 km from Junnar town. Together with Shivneri, Hadsar, Chavand, Jivdhan, Narayangad and Sindola they formed the group of seven forts that protected the medieval trade route running from Junnar through Naneghat to the port of Kalyan.

From the base village of Nimgiri the climb to the fort entrance takes about an hour, and it is very steep until the saddle between the peaks. Another half-hour is enough to explore the top. A few bastions remain in good shape while the rest of the walls have crumbled, and there are rock-cut cisterns and the remains of buildings. Hero stones, or veergal, stand near a temple on the way up.
