The story

Hadsar is one of the forts of the Junnar region of Pune district built to protect the ancient trade route from Maval down to Kalyan by way of Naneghat. It is believed to date from the Satavahana era, was named in the Treaty of Purandar between Shivaji and the Mughals, and was taken by the British in 1818.

Its distinctive feature is the entrance: the bastion and gateway, the guards' rooms, water cisterns and steps are all carved out of the living rock. At the top are a Mahadev temple with stone images of Ganesh, Garud and Hanuman, and a large lake. Hadsar village lies 13 km north-west of Junnar. The easier route climbs from the south through the main gate, while the northern route involves a 20-foot rock climb on cut holds that calls for experienced help and ropes.
