Nandhaur Wildlife Sanctuary was created in 2012 and covers 269.96 sq km of the Terai Arc Landscape, a forest belt running from Uttarakhand into Nepal. Bounded by the Gola and Sharda rivers, it falls within the Haldwani forest division, forming a corridor between the Ramnagar and Terai Central forest divisions and Nepal's Shuklaphanta National Park. It has been part of the Shivalik Elephant Reserve since 2002, and in 2004 the Wildlife Institute of India named it one of three habitats vital to the tiger's long-term survival.
Sal dominates the forest, mixed with over 100 tree species such as shisham, teak, chir pine and bamboo. About 25 mammal species live here, including Asian elephants, tigers, leopards and sloth bears, along with some 250 kinds of birds, 15 reptiles and 20 fish; a smooth-coated otter was sighted in 2026. Illegal logging, boulder mining, poaching and diversion of forest land are the main threats.
