Nanded Fort, also called Nandgiri Fort, stands on the bank of the Godavari about 4 km from Nanded and some 3 km from the railway station. Tradition credits its building to Muhammad bin Tughluq, who took Nanded in 1318.
The fort then changed hands many times. The Bahmani Sultanate held it by 1358, a Gond chief from Berar seized Nanded in 1398, and Ahmad Shah I Wali took it in 1428. Malik Ambar fought the Mughals at Nanded in 1602, and Shah Jahan won the fort in 1617; it later came under the Nizams of Hyderabad, who held Nanded until 1948. Its double ring of walls once had 24 bastions, 18–20 m high, of which eight survive in good condition. The grounds have been turned into a garden for visitors, with a water tank inside, and a full tour takes about an hour.
