The story

The Muhafiz Khan Mosque in Ahmedabad dates from 1465, when Jamail-ud-Din Muhafiz Khan, then governor, had it built during the reign of Mahmud Shah I. It is counted among the more exceptional buildings of the city and a fine example of Gujarat Sultanate architecture, and it is protected as a Monument of National Importance.

Its facade has three arched entrances with a richly carved minaret 15 m high at each end, in a design related to the Isanpur Mosque that brought a new style to Ahmedabad; the building measures 16 by 11 m. Alexander Forbes had wooden replicas made in the 1880s, now in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. Rioters damaged carvings on the southern side in 2002, and the mosque reopened after restoration in 2006.
