01 — The story

The story

Mrugagad, in the Sudhagad taluka of Raigad district, is a very small stone-built fort on a spur running out from the Western Ghats at a height of 1,750 ft. It lies near the village of Bheliv, not far from Lonavala, Khandala and Khopoli.

Bheliv, 30 km from Khopoli, is linked by road to Jambhulpada, the nearest town, which buses and private vehicles reach from Khopoli and Pali. The trek from Bheliv takes about an hour through thick forest with large mango trees, and rock-cut steps on the eastern ridge lead to the top. A small empty cave sits on the northern edge. There is no water on the fort, so walkers need to bring their own.
