The story

Mount Rosary Church, or the Church of Our Lady of Rosary, stands in Kallianpur, a suburb of Udupi in Karnataka, close to NH 66. It began in 1837, during the Goan schism, when some Catholic families left Milagres Cathedral and built their own church a few yards away. In 1880 Fr Albert D'Souza started a new one on Nejar Hill, and when funds ran out Mattheus Rebello, hereditary Patel of Kallianpur, pledged his property and took a loan to finish it. The first Mass was said on 14 May 1882.

The present building, raised to mark 175 years, opened on 6 January 2015 after nearly three years of work. It seats 1,200, and its dimensions are 115 by 76 feet, with a height of 60 feet. Its features include a high altar by artists from Korathi in Kerala, tinted windows with scenes from the Bible, a mosaic Way of the Cross and an air-conditioned adoration chapel.
