The story

Moti Jheel, whose name means Pearl Lake, is a rectangular lake in the Benajhabar area of Kanpur that also serves as a drinking-water reservoir. It was built under the British Raj as a reservoir for the Kanpur Waterworks, when it went by the name Septic Tank, and was later reshaped by the city as a public recreation ground with landscaped gardens and a children's park.

With Kamala Retreat and Moti Park, the lake ranks among the main places for leisure in this industrial city, once called the Manchester of the East, and its green space is often described as the lungs of Kanpur. Lala Lajpat Rai Hospital lies on one side; on the other are municipal corporation buildings and a water treatment plant run by the Kanpur Development Authority. The grounds also hold an amusement park, a Japanese garden and Lajpat Bhawan, and seasonal fairs take place here. City buses stop at Moti Jheel on Mall Road.
