The story

Morgan House is a colonial mansion on the Durpin Dara ridge above Kalimpong town, built in the 1930s by George Morgan. It sits within an estate of about sixteen acres facing the Kanchenjunga range, and the grounds are popular with photographers, especially early and late in the day.

The house is said to date from the marriage of a jute baron to the owner of an indigo plantation, and it later served as a summer retreat and a setting for grand parties. With no heir, it passed through trustees and came to the government after Independence; the tourism department took it over in 1965, and it has long been run as a heritage lodge for visitors.

Stone walls, gabled roofs, tall chimneys and old glass windows give it the look of a classic hill-station mansion. Ghost stories have made it a favourite with filmmakers, and a lounge displays mementoes of its film appearances. Nature trails loop through the estate.
