The Lepcha Museum in Kalimpong is dedicated to the Lepcha, the indigenous people of these eastern Himalayan hills. It gathers objects, texts and craftwork that trace the community's traditions, rituals and long history in the region, and offers a good introduction to a culture far older than the town's colonial and trading past.
A highlight is the material on the Lepcha script, which records a language rich in symbolism and helps explain how the community has kept its identity over the centuries. The displays cover both the older story of the people and the pressures they face today. The building itself is part of the experience, with detailed carvings and painted patterns covering walls and ceilings in traditional Lepcha style.
