The story

Manjanikkara Dayara is a Syriac Orthodox monastery on a hillock at Manjanikkara near Omalloor in Pathanamthitta district. It was founded by Mor Yulios Elias Qoro, the Patriarchal delegate to the Malankara church, and is the seat of the Patriarchal delegate and of the metropolitan of the churches run directly by the Patriarchate.

In February 1932 Patriarch Ignatius Elias III came to Manjanikkara, said he wished to stay there permanently, and died two days later, on 13 February. He was buried on land north of the Mor Stephanos church, and Mor Yulios Elias Qoro built the monastery church over his tomb. He is the only Patriarch of Antioch buried in Malankara, and on his feast day each year thousands of pilgrims from around the world walk to the tomb. Two later Patriarchal delegates are also buried in the church, which long served as a seminary.
