The story

Mama Bhagne Pahar is a rock formation near Dubrajpur in Birbhum district. Its best-known feature is a pair of almost round granite boulders, one balanced on the other, called Mama Bhagne, the maternal uncle and nephew, and a well-known landmark in West Bengal. Many other boulders lie scattered around, at the far eastern edge of the Chota Nagpur Plateau. Pahareswar, a temple to Shiva, stands at the foot of the rocks.

Two legends explain the stones. In one, Rama was carrying rocks from the Himalayas in his aerial chariot to build a bridge for his campaign against Ravana, when his horses took fright over Dubrajpur and some stones fell out. In the other, Vishwakarma gathered them at Shiva's command to raise a second Kashi in a single night, but dawn came before work began. Satyajit Ray used the rocks as a motif in his film Abhijan, and his Feluda story Robertsoner Ruby is set partly around the hill.
