The story

Madhavaram Botanical Garden was set up by the Tamil Nadu horticulture department at Madhavaram Milk Colony in Chennai, on the grounds of the state horticulture farm. It was the city's second botanical garden after Semmozhi Poonga and is described as its largest. The foundation stone was laid on 15 September 2010, and although 28.51 acres were planned at first, it opened on 20.21 acres, built for ₹57.3 million.

The garden is laid out in sections for fruit, medicinal plants, indoor plants, cactus and an ornamental arboretum, plus an area for protected cultivation. A small bridge, built to draw birds, gives visitors a view over the lake. Plans for the garden included around 400 plant species, a glasshouse modelled on the one at Udhagamandalam, an open-air theatre seating about 150, and a section for the 27 birth stars of the Hindu almanac.
