Chennakesava Perumal Temple stands in Peddanaickenpettah, in Chennai's George Town, and is dedicated to Chenna Kesava Perumal, a form of Vishnu. With the nearby Chenna Malleeswarar Temple it forms a pair of twin temples, and the deity is regarded as the city's patron; one view holds that the name Chennai, or Chennapattanam, derives from these temples.
Accounts of its history differ. The original twin temples are said to date from around 1646 and stood where the Madras High Court now is; grants to them by Beri Thimmappa, interpreter to Francis Day, are recorded. The British East India Company later demolished them to secure and enlarge Fort St George, and Manali Muthukrishna Mudaliar built new twin temples on Devaraja Mudali Street; the temple's own account dates the demolition to 1757 and the rebuilding to 1762.
