The story

Kalikambal Temple in central Chennai is a shrine to the goddess Kalikambal, known for its painted murals and decorated pillars. It once stood on another site and was moved when the British East India Company built Fort St. George, keeping its religious importance. Legend says sages such as Vyasa, Agastya and Pulastya worshipped its deity.

The processional deity, Periyanayaki, sits on a large chariot with images of Mahalakshmi and Saraswati beside her. Unusually, the temple's sacred water comes from the sea, and its sacred tree is a mango. A 10-metre tower was added to the old structure in the 1980s, and the temple was enlarged in 2014. It also appears in Rajinikanth's film Baba.
