01 — The story

The story

The Lyari Riverbed lies about 70 km from Bhuj, roughly an hour and a half by road, behind the Dhinodhar hills. The Lyari River, which rises in Pakistan, has worn its bed into ancient rock over a very long time, leaving a stretch of sand, water and eroded stone in otherwise dry Kutch.

Tall sandstone pillars and other formations, worn by wind, water and age, line the bed. Their surfaces turn ochre and orange as the light shifts through the day. The site is quiet, with little human noise, and it shows the slow work of erosion and earth movement.
