The story

The Lolab Valley, once called Lolo after a Maharaja Lolo said to have founded it, is a Himalayan side valley of the Kashmir Valley in Kupwara district. It runs about 26 km from its entrance at Goose village, a kilometre east of Kupwara, to Diver, is around 5 km wide and lies at about 1,590 m. The Lahwal River flows through it from east to west, and it contains three smaller valleys, Kalaroos, Potnai and Brunai.

The valley has many old springs and dense forests of deodar, pine and fir, and its apple, cherry, peach, apricot and walnut orchards have earned it the name fruit bowl of Jammu and Kashmir. The caves of Kalaroos and the Green Meadows are among its sights. Black and brown bears, ibex, markhor, hangul and musk deer are recorded here, and the valley is linked by road to Srinagar.
