The story

Khanpursar is a small, shallow lake at Khanpur village near Ganderbal, roughly 24 km north-west of Srinagar on the right bank of the Jhelum. Manasbal Lake lies 6 km to its north. Springs and a few seasonal channels feed it, and it drains into the Jhelum.

The lake is roughly oval, about 400 m long and 300 m wide, and no more than 4 m deep. Willow plantations and paddy fields fill its catchment, with Khanpur on the east, Batpora to the south and Guzhama to the north-west. Local people value it as a source of fish and of lotus stem.
