01 — The story

The story

Lhagyala Gompa stands above the Morshing Valley in Morshing village, about 80 km from Bomdila. Its founding is credited to Kachen Lama in the 7th century, close to a thousand years before Tawang Monastery. It follows the Gelug school, was tied to Ganden Jangtse Monastery near Lhasa, and was the seat of one of old Monyul's three principal Buddhist lineages.

The multi-storey stone and wood building keeps old scrolls, manuscripts and 16th and 17th century statues of Je Tsongkhapa, Chenresig, Hayagriva and the nine Lhagyala Rinpoches. The monastery is also honoured as the birthplace of Khandro Drowa Sangmo, a tantric meditator and queen whose story is still told in opera; a footprint attributed to her lies close to where the Battle of Lhagyala was fought in 1962.
