Eaglenest Wildlife Sanctuary lies in the Himalayan foothills of West Kameng district and takes its name from the Indian Army's Red Eagle Division. It climbs from about 500 to 3,250 metres, so subtropical forest, dense evergreen woodland and cool temperate habitat all fall within its limits, each with its own species.
The sanctuary is best known for birds. The Bugun liocichla, a bird found nowhere else and named after the local Bugun tribe, was discovered here in 2006; Ward's trogon, Mrs. Gould's sunbird, laughingthrushes and parrotbills also occur, along with more than 160 recorded butterfly species. An annual bird festival has been a state government event since 2022. March and April are the peak birding months, and the sanctuary closes from June to September.
