01 — The story

The story

This Lakshmi Narasimha shrine, known in full as the Abaya Hastha Swayambu temple, is at Agaram Agraharam, a village in Hosur taluk about 15 km from Hosur on the Rayakottai road. The deity is considered swayambu, or self-manifested, and is backed by a rock that the Ahobila Mutt's pontiff described as rare.

The shrine's story begins in 1998, when a group developing a housing layout here ran into a string of setbacks that astrologers attributed to Narasimha. A failed 850-foot borewell was followed, after prayers, by water found at about seven feet in a sump dug on the temple land, and devotees say the village still uses it. In 2013 the 46th Jeeyar of the Ahobila Mutt visited, and the land holding the deity was given to the Mutt, which plans to build a full temple. The main event is the fifteen-day Panguni Uthiram festival, when the deities are taken round the streets in a chariot.
