The story

Kundala Dam, or Setuparvatipuram Dam, lies on the Muthirapuzha River in Mattupetty panchayat, Idukki district, 20 km from Munnar on the way to Top Station. The masonry structure stands 46.93 m high and runs 259.38 m long, and it is considered Asia's first arch dam. It belongs to the Pallivasal Hydroelectric Project, the first such scheme in Kerala, whose first power unit was commissioned on 19 March 1940.

The reservoir has become a tourist spot, and the dam is counted among the major tourist destinations around Munnar. It has five Ogee-type spillways, and stored water passes along the Palar River to Mattupetty dam downstream. Close by are Pampadumchola National Park, Kurinjimalai Sanctuary and Meesappulimalai.
