01 — The story

The story

Mattupetty Dam is a concrete gravity dam about 11 km from Munnar in Idukki district, finished in 1953 to generate hydroelectric power. It stands at roughly 1,700 m above sea level among hills and eucalyptus woods, and its reservoir stores 55.4 million cubic metres. The reservoir also supplies drinking water to Mattupetty village.

Mattupetty Lake does not dry up even in the hot months. Boat rides run on the green water, and the shore suits walks with views across the valley. Tea plantations and forest surround the dam and support many kinds of birds, while elephants sometimes come to the water to drink before moving back into the woods. Treks lead out through the surrounding country.
