Kotappakonda is a sacred hill about 62 km southwest of Guntur city in Palnadu district, rising to roughly 1,380 feet with three separate peaks. Its name is read as 'hill of eagles'. The main shrine on the summit, the Trikoteswara Swamy Temple, honours Shiva and is thought to date from the Satavahana period. The Old Kotayya Temple stands on Rudra Shikharam and the Paapanaseswara Temple on Vishnu Shikharam, where Vishnu is said to have done penance to Shiva.
Local legend tells of Anandavalli, also called Gollabhama, a Shiva devotee blessed by Jangama Devara, who later became a lingam after a promise was broken. The Tirunallu festival on Mahashivaratri draws lakhs of people from surrounding villages, with decorated displays, lights and cultural events through the night.
