The story

The Amaralingeswara Temple stands in Amaravati on the bank of the Krishna River and is dedicated to Shiva. Tradition holds that the god Indra set up its linga, and it is counted among a group of five old Shiva shrines in Andhra Pradesh. Its beginnings are attributed to the Satavahana period, and it has been repaired and enlarged many times since.

The building mixes Dravidian and Nagara features, seen in its tall gopuram, carved surfaces and decorated pillars. Maha Shivaratri draws large numbers of worshippers. The Dhyana Buddha statue, the remains of the Amaravati stupa and the Amaravati Museum all lie within a few minutes of the temple.
