01 — The story

The story

Kondaveedu Fort sits on a narrow hill range at about 1,700 feet, around 32 km from Guntur. The Telugu Chodas built it, the Kakatiyas strengthened it, and Prolaya Vema Reddy took it in 1323. Golconda's sultans later fought over it, and the French held it from 1752. Two more forts stand nearby, and all three are now ruined.

The site has large ramparts, storehouses, granaries, wells, a bunker and two gates, Kolepalli Darwaza and Nadella Darwaza; the main gate is a three-storey granite structure. A pillared stone hall carries inscriptions 110 metres long. Within the walls are the Trikoteshwara Swamy and Gopinatha temples, Kathulabave and a mosque said to reuse temple stones. In 2019 remains of a Buddhist stupa from the 1st to 2nd century CE were found under an old temple.
