The story

The Khokari (also spelt Khokri) tombs are a group of three large stone tombs near Murud, Maharashtra, built for early rulers of the former Janjira State. The biggest holds Sidi Surul Khan, chief of Janjira from 1707 to 1734, and is said to have been built while he was still alive. The two smaller ones belong to Sidi Kasim, better known as Yakut Khan, who commanded Janjira and for a time the Mughal fleet, and to his brother Khairiyat Khan.

Both smaller tombs carry Arabic inscriptions; Yakut Khan's records his death in AD 1707, and Khairiyat Khan's is believed to give 1696. The Nawab once set aside revenue from nearby villages to keep the tombs in repair, and the Quran used to be recited here on Thursday nights, on death anniversaries and at urus. Built in the Indo-Saracenic style, the monument is now under restoration by the ASI's Mumbai Circle.
