01 — The story

The story

Khambhalida Caves are a group of Buddhist caves near Rajkot, generally dated to around the 4th century AD. Monks once used them as a secluded retreat for meditation and study, and the trees and hills around them still keep the setting quiet.

The central cave is the best known, with detailed carvings of Bodhisattvas that show the skill of the craftsmen who cut them. Other shrines carry figures of deities and symbolic images linked to Buddhist ideas of compassion and enlightenment. The caves are a short drive from Gondal, home of the Naulakha Palace, and from the Hingolgadh sanctuary.
