Karian Shola National Park is a small protected area of 5.03 km² in the Anaimalai Hills, towards the southern tip of the Western Ghats, lying entirely inside Tamil Nadu's Anamalai Tiger Reserve; the same forest carries on for another 3.77 km² into Kerala's Parambikulam Tiger Reserve. It was nominated as a national park in 1989 and is part of the Western Ghats World Heritage Site, inscribed in 2012.
The park mixes shola, a stunted, moss-laden rainforest, with rolling montane grassland and high rocky cliffs. Mist often hangs in the forest, where wind keeps most trees under 15 m and their twisted branches carry lichens, orchids and other epiphytes; the grassland holds neelakurinji, a shrub that flowers once in twelve years. The Anamalai hills are an important refuge for the Nilgiri tahr and the Asian elephant, and tigers, leopards, sloth bears, deer, otters and pangolins also live here.
