The story

Kapileshwar Mahadev Mandir is a historical Hindu temple to Lord Shiva at Garhbaruari, in the Supaul district of Bihar and the Mithila region. It stands on the bank of the Haridra river, with Jagatpur on one side and Garhbaruari, also called Baruari, on the other, 10 km south of the district headquarters. The Shivalinga here is known as Baba Kapileshwar, and the site itself goes by names such as Kapileshwar Sthan and Baba Kapileshwar Nath Mahadev Sthan.

Its origin is credited to the Vedic sage Kapila, and legend treats the spot as his taposthali, a place of penance, in ancient times. A book by Pandit Krishnadev Jha, a scholar from the village, considers its founding to date from 1024 BC. Today the temple is also known in the region for organising the Kanwar Yatra.
