The story

Kalavantin Durg is a 686-metre rock pinnacle in the Western Ghats of Raigad district, beside Prabalgad fort. It also goes by Kalavantin Pinnacle and Kelve Teen. Durg means fort in Marathi, but there is no fort on top; the pinnacle seems to have served as a lookout over the surrounding country. Local guides say it was built for a queen named Kalavantin in the 15th century, around when Prabalgad was raised, though little is recorded.

The climb is regarded as one of the hardest in the Western Ghats. From Thakurwadi village in Panvel taluka a 3-kilometre hike reaches Prabalmachi, where the path splits for Prabalgad and Kalavantin. The final section rises at about 60 degrees on rock-cut steps up to two feet high, and it has claimed lives: a trekker fell to his death just short of the top in 2018, and another died in 2016 on a combined Kalavantin and Prabalgad trek.
