The story

Kailasha Nathar Temple is an old Shiva temple, now being renovated, in the village of Piramanoor, Tiruppuvanam taluk, of Sivaganga district, in the Pandya country. Tiruppuvanam is about 5 km away and Madurai about 23 km. Shiva is worshipped as Kailasha Nathar and the goddess as Kamatchi Ambiga, both facing east, in a compound of about 78 cents with shrines to Ganapathy, Subramani, Vishnu, the Navagrahas, Surya, Chandra and Vairavan.

The village name, from Brahman and oor, recalls the temple legend. When Brahma falsely claimed to have seen the top of Shiva's column of fire, calling the screw pine flower (thazhampu) as his witness, Shiva cursed both. To be freed, Brahma brought a linga from Mount Kailash and worshipped it here. Pujas are held twice a day, with special worship on Pradosham, and on Thirukarthikai a screw pine tree is set up and burned, the Chokkappanai.
