The story

Jhirkeshwar Mahadev, also called Jhir Mandir, is an ancient Hindu cave temple to Shiva in the foothills of the Aravalli Range, at Ferozepur Jhirka in Haryana. Legend credits its lingam to Yudhishthira, the eldest of the Pandavas, who is said to have manifested it by invoking mantras on the way to Virat Nagar during the exile.

In 1870, it is said, Shiva appeared in a dream to a tehsildar, Pandit Jeevanalal Sharma, who then built the top of the temple. A development board registered under the Haryana government has looked after its affairs since 1970. Each year the temple is the last stop of the Braj Mandal Jalabhishek Yatra, which begins on 22 July, and a big fair takes place at Maha Shivaratri and during the month of Shraavana.
