01 — The story

The story

Jaswant Garh honours Rifleman Jaswant Singh Rawat of the 4th Garhwal Rifles, who held his position against the Chinese army for 72 hours, causing heavy losses before he was killed. The memorial was built where he fought, about 25 km from Tawang at roughly 10,000 feet, and he received the Mahavir Chakra after his death.

The shrine-like building, painted in camouflage, holds his portrait, uniform, cap, watch and belt. Soldiers posted here keep his uniform clean and boots polished and still serve him bed tea, breakfast and dinner on a fixed schedule, believing he continues to guard the post. A museum on the site displays weapons, uniforms and belongings of Indian soldiers who fought in World War I.
