01 — The story

The story

Jaimal and Patta's Palace is a pair of residences inside Chittorgarh Fort, set on high ground with wide views over the surrounding country. The buildings take their name from Jaimal and Patta, two Rajput commanders who led the defence of the fort, and date from the 16th century, the period of Mughal emperor Akbar.

Their fame comes from the siege of Chittorgarh in 1568, when Akbar's army closed in and this quarter became one of the last points of resistance. Badly wounded, the two leaders kept rallying their men and chose to die fighting rather than submit, and they are still honoured in Rajput memory as models of courage. Carved facades, jharokha balconies and courtyards can still be traced in the remains. Rana Kumbha Palace and Fateh Prakash Palace are close by within the fort.
