The story

The Irumkulangara Durga Bhagavathi Temple is at Thottam, Manacaud, about 1.8 km south-west of the Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple in Thiruvananthapuram. Counted among the oldest temples in Kerala, it takes its name from the two ponds beside it, irum meaning two and kulam pond. Tradition holds that priests of the Padmanabhaswamy Temple once came here by country boat to perform the rituals, and the two temples share the same tantri family.

Durga is worshipped here as a form of Adi Parasakthi, and red flowers other than thetti are not offered, while rituals such as Thottampaattu and Ottam are not held. A sacred grove for the serpent gods stands on the grounds, and the pond in front reflects the temple. A new chuttambalam and sivelippura in traditional Kerala style were inaugurated on 25 December 2009 by the Travancore Maharaja Uthradom Thirunal Marthanda Varma.
