The story

Indira Gandhi Zoological Park covers 625 acres in the green foothills of the Eastern Ghats at Visakhapatnam. It opened in 1977 with a small collection and has grown to hold more than 80 species of mammals, birds and reptiles, kept in enclosures designed to resemble their natural habitats.

The park is divided into sections for large carnivores, lesser carnivores, primates, small mammals, birds and reptiles. Interactive displays explain how ecosystems work, a library holds books on wildlife, and the zoo runs quizzes, debates and drawing and essay contests to promote conservation.
